What is a Doula?
The Association of Ontario Doulas defines a doula as “..someone who provides non-clinical support and care to families during childbirth and the postpartum period.” Doulas are professionals who work to provide physical, emotional and educational support to pregnant people, their partners and new families. I like to think of a doula as your coach and professional best friend! My role is to help you feel confident, informed and cared for every step of the way.
Birth doulas focus on supporting clients during pregnancy and labour by providing physical, emotional and educational support.
Postpartum doulas support families in the postpartum period as they transition to parenthood with practical help, emotional support and evidence-based care.
Does a Doula replace a Midwife, Obstetrician, Nurse or other Care Provider?
Not at all! Doulas are non-medical professionals who work alongside your chosen health care provider and your partner, not instead of them. Think of me as an extra layer of steady, continuous support - someone focused on your comfort, supporting your choices and experience as a family.
A doula is part of your support team, not your clinical team. Your doctor or midwife focuses on the medical aspects of birth, while I focus on your comfort, emotions, and the overall flow of your experience. We work beautifully together.
What are the benefits of having a Doula?
Research shows that having a doula can reduce the likelihood of medical interventions, shorten labour, and increase overall satisfaction with the birth experience. But beyond statistics, most families tell me that having a doula gave them peace of mind — knowing they had a calm, familiar presence throughout it all.
Do Doulas only support unmedicated births?
Not at all. I support all types of births — medicated or unmedicated, vaginal or cesarean, spontaneous or induced. My role isn’t to steer you toward one kind of birth, but to help you feel informed, confident, and cared for through whatever choices or circumstances unfold.
Whether you’re planning an epidural from the start or hoping to go without medication, I’ll be there with comfort measures, reassurance, and calm guidance every step of the way.
When should I hire a Doula?
The choice is up to you and I say the sooner the better! That way, you’ll guarantee the availability for your expected delivery date. Many families reach out around the end of the first trimester, but it’s never too late to connect! The sooner we start, the more time we have to build a relationship and prepare together before your birth.
Does my partner still have a role if we hire a Doula?
Definitely - I love supporting partners too! Doulas work with both the birthing individual and their partner to support them as they welcome a new baby (or babies!). My goal is never to take their place, but to help them feel more confident and involved. I can suggest ways for them to comfort you, give them breaks when needed, and help you both feel supported as a team. I always honour the relationships that exist within families, and find flow as a part of your team!
